Papantonis Winery is located in Argos, perhaps the oldest continuously inhabited city of Greece. Insisting on quality rather than quantity, the company stays true to the reasons that led its founders to professional winemaking. Reasons and principles that combine and express these people's philosophy of life, the deeper meaning of their wines' labels and the quintessence of the local grape varieties. Officially established in 1992 by siblings Antonis and Kallie Papantonis, the company has its production, storage and sales facilities in the southern part of Argos. The vineyards, situated just outside of the village Malandreni, belong to the renowned viticultural region of Nemea. They were acquired much earlier, in 1979, by Antonis Papantonis, when he felt that living in nature and cultivating vines to make wine was offering a much more fulfilling life than the big city could ever offer him. After more than a decade’s experience in vine-growing and wine-making and having got a grasp of the market, he decides to combine powers with his sister, Kallie, and her unique marketing skills in order to create their own labels, promote and sell their wines.
The Papantonis winery can be visited daily from 10:00 until 14:00 and by appointment on weekends.
After welcoming the visitors to the winery and we introduce ourselves, we describe in a few words the philosophy of the winery.
Next we take our guests to the winemaking area where the wine process is described. We proceed to the barrel cave where we explain the process of aging the red wines, and then we go to the cellar where the bottles are stored.
Last but not least, we sit in the bar and taste the wines accompanied by local delicacies (cold cuts, cheeses, olives, homemade spanakopita, etc.) and discuss about the wines.
